Sailor's beanies are a tried and true part of many knitter's portfolios, expecially where Glena hails from: the San Juan Islands off the coast of Washington state. Glena learned the classic knitting pattern from her mother, a descendent of Norwegian immigrants who arrived in the area in the late 1800s. Glena puts her own brightly colored twist on these classic hats and has been generous enough to share one of her patterns with us! Check out the pictures and pattern below.
Glena, a longtime Woven knitter, offers classes in knitting. Can't get out to the San Juans? Woven sponsors skype sessions to bring Glena's talent and charm to you.
Pattern:
100g wool (approximately, but this may vary slightly) Pair 3¾mm needles/UK Size 9 To measure 59cm/23in Tension 23 sts and 31 rows to 10cm (stocking st) on 3¾ needles or size needed to achieve stated tension. It is important to check your tension before starting your garment. If there are too many stitches to 10cm, your tension is tight and you should change to a larger size needle. If there are too few, your tension is loose and you should change to a smaller size needle. It is essential to work to the stated tension. Cast on 134 sts with 3¾mm needles. Rib row 1 – (WS), K2, *P2, K2; rep from * to end. Rib row 2 – P2,*K2, P2; rep from * to end. Rep these 2 rows 20 times more, then row 1 again, thus ending with RS facing for next row (134 sts). Starting with a K row, work in stocking st for 18 rows, thus ending with RS facing for next row. Shape crown: Row 1 – K1, *K2tog, K20; rep from * to last st, K1 (128 sts). Row 2 and every alt row – P. Row 3 – K1, *K2tog, K19; rep from * to last st, K1 (122 sts). Row 5 – K1, *K2tog, K18; rep from * to last st, K1 (116 sts). Cont to dec in this way on every alt row (working one less st between dec each time) until 20 sts rem. Break wool, thread through rem sts, draw up tightly and fasten off securely. Make up: Join seam, reversing seam for turn-back on rib. Fold back brim.
